More Than "go"
Japan’s Isuzu Motors Ltd. said Thursday that it is considering a set up in a joint venture to produce diesel engines with Toyota Motor Corp. as part of the tie-up which was announced by the two firms last year.
The truck maker and the world’s number one car maker have been discussing details of their alliance in development and production of diesel engines since they formed the tie-up.
An Isuzu spokesman said that putting up a joint production venture is one option which the two auto makers are looking at. However, they are also considering other options.
The latest comments were aired after Isuzu said last December that building a new diesel engine plant with Toyota was one option. The Isuzu spokesman said that the two auto makers may be open for the details of their alliance by the end of August.
The industry leader in the gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle market, Toyota, is seeking to improve its fuel-efficient and low-emission technologies by tying up with Isuzu, which is a major developer of diesel engines.
With the soaring prices of gas, diesel engines are attracting interest because they are almost 20 percent to 30 percent more fuel efficient than gasoline engines. About 50 percent of the vehicles sold in Europe are powered by diesel.
Aside from making diesel engines for its own vehicles, Isuzu also supplies such engines to U.S. auto titan General Motors Corp. (GM).
Last year, Toyota took a 5.9 percent stake in Isuzu. The team up came after Isuzu dissolved a capital tie-up with GM, which is trying to reorganize its business.
A Toyota spokesman said that the details have not been finalized on the diesel engine joint venture.

Question Is, I see Supra’s running 10’s like all day. Slicks, forget about It. Even better times. Dyno pulls, sick. I just don’t see how an Inline six single, or twin BPU etc are making so much HP and getting Into the 8 second catagory. Also the RPM range In sick. Im just stunned at the performance.

What kind of gas mileage does the 2WD Toyota Rav4 get?
I’m speaking of the 2WD automatic model with a 4 cylinder engine. Fueleconomy.gov is always way off as the people who post their mileages on that site must drive with a lead foot. I learned that a long time ago when I saw people list their Geo Metros as only getting 24 MPG highway.
I’ve owned a Ford Escape before and it only got 20-22 MPG highway so a Rav4 looks like the next best thing.
Toyota Ranked 6th in Fortune Global 500 List

The producer of top-of-the-line Toyota Camry parts, Toyota Motor Corp. was the only Asian company that made it to the top 10 of Fortune Global 500 rankings. Toyota’s revenue of $204.75 billion has qualified it for the 6th position.

There were a total of 67 Japanese companies that made it into the Fortune’s list down by three from the previous year which is attributed to the depreciation of yen against some of the world’s major currencies which reduces their revenues in dollars.

Toyota Top Exec Urges Detroit to Have Faith
It is a known fact that Detroit’s Big Three have been experiencing setbacks in recent years while the leading Asian brand Toyota is surging to the top. While that may be the case, the Toyota North America President Jim Press has expressed his opinion on the fate of the auto industry in general over the next few years. He said that while car manufacturers are experiencing hard times recently, technology and innovation will bring these car manufacturers back to profitability in the long run.
Jim Press recently became the first non-Japanese to be elected as a member of Toyota’s board. The appointment of Press on Toyota’s board came in the middle of the growing American hostility towards Toyota which is being blamed for the losses suffered by American car manufacturers.
While Press has earned the spot on Toyota’s board, some auto industry experts think that the move is aimed to reduce the amount of hostility that the company has been receiving from Americans. Press is particularly paled a major role in the increasing success of the Japanese car manufacturer in the United States auto market.
Jim Press recently acknowledged that Detroit is still in a position to play a key role in auto production today and in the future as well. He pointed out that Detroit is still looked upon as the center of the development of “technological solutions” which he sees will play a major role in the success of the United States auto industry. He said that these technological advances will certainly address different issues confronting the auto industry such as the threat of global warming, safety of their consumers, and energy security which is one of President Bush’s goals as reported in his State of the Union Address.
“What Detroit needs to do is to continue to have faith in itself,” says Press. “”It isn’t reinvention that is necessary. It’s to go through the process of entering a global age. And that’s going to give us some heartburn in the short term, but from a long-term perspective, we have a lifetime of success and prosperity,” added Press. He made the statement at a luncheon where he was given the distinction of being the automotive executive of the year.
The contrast between Toyota and Detroit’s Big Three has been increasing in the past few years. As General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler shuts down plants, reduce working hours and production, and cut down jobs, Toyota is enjoying success on their home turf. While American car manufacturers posted declining sales, Toyota, along with other Asian brands, have been increasing their hold and their share of the U.S. auto market.
Last year, Toyota posted their fifth straight year of increase in global auto sales. In fact, the Japanese outfit has overtaken Ford as the world’s second largest car manufacturer. In the United States, Toyota now has the third biggest share of the auto market and could now be found almost at the heels of Ford. Auto industry experts are expecting Toyota to take over Ford’s second place standing in the U.S. auto market.
Furthermore, there are predictions that Toyota will soon become the largest car manufacturer in the world. Some experts think that by next year, Toyota will be able to stake claim to the title of being the largest car manufacturer in the world. Although this seems likely to happen, Jim Press pointed out the present status of Chrysler which is on the auction block. After all, General Motors is rumored to be interested in buying the American auto giant. If that happens, Toyota will have a bigger mountain to climb to become the world’s largest car manufacturer.
During the said speaking engagement, Jim Press said that Toyota is open to the idea of setting up an assembly plant in the state of Michigan. While Toyota has a technical center at Ann Arbor, they have yet to set up an assembly plant in the state known as the hotbed of American car manufacturers. In the near future though, the auto industry will surely see Toyota surging forward that not even an EBC redstuff brake pad can stop them at the moment.
Blue Collar Brands Decreases Hold on Car Buyers
Car makers have already posted their sales figures for the month of February. While Toyota and General Motors showed an increase on their number of vehicles sold for the month, Ford and Chrysler have shown reduced sales figures. All in all, the total auto sales last month has dropped by as much as 0.5 percent compared to the same period last year. The reason for this is that consumers are opting for well-made and technologically advanced vehicles.
Analysts say that the reduction in the interest of the American motoring public on blue collared brands like Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Pontiac, and Buick is the reason for the decrease in the number of vehicles sold in the U.S. market last month. The current trend in the market shows that car buyers are more often than not inclined to buying brands that do offer luxury and all things pertaining to luxury. This is evident in the increase in the sales of luxury brands like BMW and Audi. In fact, this inclination toward luxury cars saw BMW posting sales figures that is 12 percent higher than last year for the same period. Audi likewise showed a strong sales output when it posted a 37.5 percent increase in sales.
Another kind of vehicle that is taking the spotlight away for blue collared brands is hybrid cars. Toyota, the leading producer of hybrid cars, has posted yet again another record breaking sales figure for the month of February. A reason for this may be the renewed interest on CAFÉ standards and the increasing awareness on the public to protect the environment as a response to the global warming issue.
With hybrid and luxury cars driven to the front, hardworking vehicles known for heavy-duty and off road driving capabilities suffer. But with the developments being employed by blue collared brands on their vehicles, the future may see the American motoring public once again embracing blue collared brands. The use of diesel engines on heavy-duty vehicles is a good step forward since the new generation diesel engines emit less greenhouse gases and reduce fuel consumption costs as well.
While the current trend continues, Toyota will be enjoying much success. Their Toyota and Scion divisions are known for producing fuel efficient cars which are currently in demand. Their Lexus division, meanwhile, will be taking advantage of the current trend which involves car buyers opting for luxury brands and luxury cars and vehicles.
If the current trend continues, then blue collared brands need to take action immediately. They have to make their cars more competitive even against luxury brands. Developments of environment friendly vehicles are also a must if they want to put a stop to their plunge. Designing and producing high performance vehicles which are reliable, as reliable as an EBC Redstuff brake pad, is of utmost importance to once again attract the attention of car buyers and in the process reap in the cash that is due to them.
Toyota Claims Four Quality Awards
After posting an increase in May sales, Toyota one again has an achievement to feel good about. The surging Japanese car manufacturer won four segment awards at the 2007 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study. The said research is undertaken to find out the reaction of car owners after the first 90 days of ownership. This then translates to the quality of the vehicle and its ability to satisfy its consumers.
“We’ll always place a great importance on the quality and dependability of our products,” says Jim Lentz, the executive vice president of Toyota Motor Sales. “Ninety-day feedback is only the beginning of the complete ownership experience, and it is just one of the short- and long-term measures of total quality, dependability and customer satisfaction we monitor. Other measures like the Vehicle Dependability Study, Consumer Reports annual survey, warranty claims, resale value and buyer loyalty help give us a complete picture on overall quality.”
The company has four winners in their respective segments. The midsize SUV Toyota 4Runner took on award for the Japanese company. The full-size SUV Toyota Sequoia is also a winner in its category. Another Toyota Division vehicle which was given an award is the compact pickup truck Toyota Tacoma. The fourth award for the Japanese company was bagged by the Lexus RX350/RX400h.
The Lexus brand takes the second spot overall in the Nameplate IQS Ranking. Porsche still lead all brands when it comes to quality according to J.D Power and associates. Out of 100 Porsches, J.D. Power and Associates recorded only 91 problems encountered after the first three months of ownership. The vehicles included in the study are those which have not undergone any modifications yet and even those fitted with Chilton performance parts were not included.
After Porsche and Lexus, Lincoln sits at the third spot which is a great improvement after its twelfth place finish last year. For the Lincoln brand, J.D Power and Associates recorded 100 problems encountered in every 100 Lincoln vehicles. Honda is the highest ranked non-luxury brand with its fourth place finish. For the Japanese brand, there were 108 problems encountered for every 100 vehicles on an average.
Mercedes-Benz is the number five brand on the list with 111 problems reported for every 100 vehicles. Jaguar, another luxury brand is number six on the list with 112 problems encountered for 100 vehicles. Toyota is tied with Jaguar with 112 PP100 vehicles. Close behind Toyota and Jaguar is mercury with 113 PP100 vehicles. Nissan’s luxury division Infiniti finished ninth with 117 problems recorded every 100 vehicles.
Ford takes the tenth spot with 120 problems recorded for every 100 Ford branded vehicles. Aside from these ten brands, other notable brands which posted above industry average ratings are Scion, Hyundai, and Kia. The industry average according to J.D Power and Associates is 125 problems for every 100 vehicles.
Brands which surprisingly fell below the industry average include Volvo, BMW, Cadillac, and Audi. More interesting is the fact that while Honda has the fourth best quality, its luxury division Acura finished below the industry average with 130 problems met for every 100 vehicles.
