Which one is better in speed/reliability/handling and why? Nissan 300zx or Toyota Supra?

Toyota post
300ZX TT asked:

Also when comparing pls compare the 300ZX NA to the Supra NA separately from the 300ZX twin turbo and supra turbo.

Owners of the two cars pls post if u own a turbo or non turbo and i would be grateful if you could let me know how reliable the car was.

I am looking to buy one of them but i need to know most importantly which one will last me without having to spend thousands on parts.
and im talking about the 1990 and upwards 300zx and 1993 upwards supra :)
and please i dont want to hear how american cars have more power and easier to mod blah blah… because i havent added the word power in my question instead i added the words speed and handling, and im sorry the american cars do not deliver in handling unless its the latest Z06 which i dont have the money for.
the reason im not considering an american car is because stock the 300zx and supra will outhandle the mustang. Yes you can upgrade the suspension etc… but you can only go so far with the upgrades. the 300zx for example has been built on a chassis with handling in mind.

Therefore it has more potential than the mustang to begin with. Also id rather keep my car stock on suspension because im not looking for a race car but a daily driver that i can have some fun with but also be comfortable in at the end of a long day.

Toyota Motors North America President Honored

Toyota post
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

This weekend, the Automotive Hall of Fame presented the prestigious Industry Leader Award to Toyota Motors North America President James E. Press for the year 2006. The award was given to Press for having demonstrated and shown outstanding leadership in the industry. After all, the company which he leads has enjoyed much success in the past year. The presentation of the award is in conjunction with the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Convention held in Las Vegas.

Other citations given during the event include the institute’s oldest award which dates back to 1940. This is the Distinguished Service Citation and it was given to six industry leaders. The recipients of the distinguished service citation are: Dr. Amar G. Bose, Chairman and CEO, Bose Corp.; Jeffrey A. Cook, Technical Leader for the Ford Motor Company; Allan D. Gilmour, Vice Chairman, CFO (retired), Ford Motor Company; Timothy D. Leuiette, Chairman, President and CEO, Metaldyne Corp.; Elizabeth Lowery, Vice President, Environment and Energy, General Motors Corp.; and Phil Smart Sr., Chairman, Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz. The citations given to these six industry leaders are described to be given to those individuals “who have provided distinguished service to the automotive industry and to the recipients’ respective organizations” as per Jeffrey Leestma, the President of the Automotive Hall of Fame said.

The award given to Press comes on the heel of the recently posted sales figures of Toyota for January this year which shows their continued success that the company has carried over from last year. In North America, Toyota has sold 178,850 vehicles which becomes their best ever performance for the said month. The figure shows a 5.1 percent increase over their performance last year. Both the Toyota and the Lexus divisions have broken their sales record for the month of January. The Toyota division posted a 4.7 percent increase over January 2006 sales while Lexus has bested their January 2006 sales by 8 percent. Scion, the youth oriented marque of Toyota, also posted strong numbers with 9,004 units sold.

The continuing success of Toyota is attributed to the work ethics of their workers and the high performance cars in their lineup. Their HEV or hybrid electric vehicle which is the Toyota Prius is fast becoming a major source of income for the Japanese company. And with continuous development of new vehicles which will boast higher performance akin to those brake parts from Active Brakes Direct, the company is on its way to take the top spot from General Motors. That is if the current trend continues and both Ford and General Motors continue their slide downwards.

The January sales figures for General Motors shows a 19.7 percent decrease in the number of vehicles they have sold. Buick, Hummer, and Pontiac have the largest decline in terms of sales of all General Motors’ marques. In fact, the only marque to have posted an improvement is Saab which improved their sales by 3.3 percent over last year’s numbers.

Another American car manufacturer which shares the same fate is the Ford Motor Company which posted a 19 percent drop in their sales. The 65 percent drop in their sales to rental companies is the main reason for the overall decline in their January 2007 sales. Just like its fellow American carmaker General Motors, the Dearborn-based car manufacture has only one marque which posted positive numbers. Lincoln sales were up by 2.7 percent over their output last year during the same period.

The continued success of Toyota and their expected rise in the ranks of giant car makers surely makes Press deserving of the award. Moreover, the distinguished service awardees are also very much deserving for their contribution to the automotive industry.

Toyota to Initiate Sustainable Plant Activities

Toyota post
Joe Ratzkin asked:

Toyota Motor Corporation has recently announced via its website www.toyota-media.com/euen/ its plan of initiating sustainable plant activities for its production operations. The activities will focus on the role of nature in developing production sites that blend with their natural surroundings.

Toyota wants to develop and operate such production sites with the objective of reducing CO2 through the use of renewable energy including those derived from biomass and natural energy source such as wind and solar power. The automaker also aims to contribute to the local community and to help in conserving the environment by mean so planting trees and plants. It also wants to achieve a groundbreaking environmental performance through introduction of innovative technology and kaizen or improvement activities.

Toyota the producer of high quality Lexus car cover plans to employ its sustainable plant activities at its TMC’s Tsutsumi Plant which manufactures the Prius hybrid vehicle and chosen to pioneer the model sustainable plant. Aside from the cogeneration system that is already in place, the plant will also make use of a 2,000kW photovoltaic generation system which is one of the biggest in current use among the world’s automobile plants.

The press release posted at www.toyota-media.com/euen/ reported that Toyota is planning to paint some of the Tsutsumi’s exterior walls and other surfaces with environment improving photo catalytic paint which is designed to break down air-born nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. The paint is said to have the cleansing effect of around 2,000 trees.

An environmental sustainable plant is not complete without the greeneries; Toyota is planning to have trees local to the area planted in the plant. The automaker also intends to use its biotechnology and its afforestation knowledge like for instance covering the ground and walls with NOx-absorbent vegetation. And as part of its plan to contribute to the local community it will open an on-site environmental educational facility for the enjoyment of the general public.

By implementing all of the above environmental plans with the photovoltaic generation as the main focus, Toyota hopes to lessen Tsutsumi’s CO2 emissions by 5 percent which is equivalent to what a 240 hectare tropical rain forest can absorbed.

Toyota Motor is also doing some developments on its Takaoka Plant. The automaker is installing new innovative assembly line which will begin operation soon. Toyota is hoping that the by further streamlining production systems such as Global Body Line and Set Parts System, it will be able to improve its productivity and energy efficiency. Moreover, the automaker is also expecting that with the addition of the a second innovative assembly line at Takaoka in 2009, the plant will be able to reduce CO2 emission by 35 percent.

Gm: to Fight and to Hold Its Reign

Toyota post
Jennifer Dylan asked:

General Motors Corporation will not be giving up its reign that easy. Toyota has to fight first a pretty tight battle. GM is determined to fight and to hold the title no matter what.

GM’s 2006 sales totaled 9.1 million and is just a few notches away from that of Toyota’s. However, GM will not cede its title without waging a tough battle with its closest rival in the auto industry. GM has been the world’s No. 1 auto company since 1931. Last Thursday, it announced a sale of 9.1 million vehicles in 2006. Said figure is down from about 9.2 million the previous year.

Toyota, on the one hand, has reported 8.8 million sales. Toyota performance parts are etching a remarkable milestone in the auto realm despite the fact that they do not belong to the domestic auto circles. Toyota expects to sell 9.35 million vehicles this year. On the part of GM, this statement is hard to accept because it would mean giving the long-cherished title in favor of a rival. “We like being No. 1 and our people take pride in it, so it’s not something we would sit back and let somebody just pass us by,” said Rick Wagoner, chairman and chief executive officer of General Motors. “We’re going to fight to keep the position; and if one day we lose it, we’ll fight to get it back.”

GM has not announced its global forecast yet but according to Wagoner, GM’s foreign sales continued to grow. He added, “Outside the United States, GM sales increased 6.7 percent last year. Over the past five years, GM’s sales outside the United States have increased by 1.3 million vehicles.” Last year was the second in a row that the automaker sold more vehicles outside America.

Auto analyst Erich Merkle of IRN Inc. in Grand Rapids said the goal of the automaker which is to maintain the No. 1 post is an admirable aim. “The thing that concerns me is that Toyota just has so much momentum right now,” Merkle said. “I’m very pleased with a lot of the progress GM is making on its product front, but GM has still got to get its mojo back here in the North American auto industry. Where I think GM has a shot at running with Toyota is their wild card, which is China.”

GM is still on the lead in China with an overwhelming 32 percent increase in sales. Said sales record has significantly boosted its 2006 overall sales. “Buick is a huge brand in China,” Merkle said. “The Chinese tend to really embrace American culture and American things. They embrace American cars.” Merkle noted, “Japan’s Toyota could have some difficulty in China because of a contentious history between the countries.”

“We’re going to have to fight for every sale and do it in a way that’s consistent with building the value of the enterprise from a shareholder perspective,” Wagoner concluded. “If, as a result of that, we get passed, it won’t be a happy day for me. But I’ve lost basketball games in my life and you get ready and you learn and you go back and play the next day — and that’s what we’ll do.”

I have a 1991 Toyota Corolla that repeatedly has the problem of the engine dying when it is idling?

Toyota post
Mary M asked:

It happens especially on cool mornings. When it does this it dies at every stop and continues to do this for 10 or 15 miles. This does not happen every day but often up to 50 percent of the time. No mechanic can find out what the problem is. They have tried everything including computer analysis.

Automakers’ Dips and Creeps in April

Toyota post
Jenny Mclane asked:

Last month was not a good month for most of the auto giants. The Big Three endured dips in sales and only the Chrysler Group enjoyed a little creep upwards. “April is shaping up as a particularly weak month for automotive sales,” said Brian Johnson, an automotive analyst for the Lehman Brothers, in a note to investors last Friday.

GM sales down four percent

The General Motors Corp. reported 307,554 U.S. light vehicle sales in April, and that number is down by 9.5 percent from the sales of 339,796 during the same month the previous year. In addition, retail sales decreased by four percent, not adjusted for selling days, with truck sales down three percent and car sales at six percent.

The automaker said that about two-thirds of its sales decline was due to a planned reduction in less profitable daily rental sales. GM has slashed its daily rental sales by over 83,000 vehicles in the first four months of the year as it to shift from a focus on selling more vehicles than its competition to selling vehicles that come with hefty profits.

“I would say it’s fair to assess the industry… to say it was a bit challenging for the month,” said Paul Ballew, GM’s chief market analyst. “The final numbers are not as severe as some observers were forecasting.” Notwithstanding the cut in the overall April sales, GM executives said they continued to see strength in its newly launched vehicles, including the new GMC Acadia and the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado pickups.

Jerry Seiner, famed as the GM Guy in Salt Lake City, said that sales were good in his market, but he readily acknowledged that his market is doing better than the nation right now. “We have some growth that might be assisting us in overcoming the market,” he said. “We’re going to be five to six percent up this year on GM sales.” But he didn’t think his fellow domestic dealers would see those kinds of gains. “You have uncertainty,” he said. “It’s uncertainty in the rest of the market.”

Toyota sales dip four percent

Another auto giant to suffer a four percent dip in April is the Toyota Motor Corporation. Sales of the Japanese automaker fell to 210,457. By far, it is Toyota’s first monthly decline in almost two years. For the first time since May 2005, Toyota sold fewer vehicles in the United States in a calendar month than it did a year earlier, spokesman Xavier Dominicis said.

The Camry and the Corolla, Toyota’s stalwart sedans, both took hits as compared to the same month last year, and sales of the Camry, the top-selling car in the United States, dropped by six percent to 37,911 units sold. Sales of the Corolla, which increased in 2006 as the cost of gas climbed, fell by eleven percent to 32,289 units.

Scion, Toyota’s small-car brand, also saw double-digit percentage declines for each of its three models. The all-new Tundra was a bright spot for Toyota with sales up 61 percent to 14,200 vehicles for the month.

Ford sales dive 13 percent

The Ford Motor Company’s sales fell 13 percent in April as compared to the same month last year, and only two of the company’s six brands, Lincoln and Land Rover, posted gains. For the year, Ford sales are now off by 13.2 percent.

“It was pretty consistently weak throughout the month,” said George Pipas, Ford’s top sales analyst, during a conference call with journalists. “The entire industry was very weak,” Pipas added. “It kind of raises the question of what does the future hold.”

Ford previously warned that sales were below expectations for the industry and the Dearborn-based automaker, which recently posted a $282-million loss for the first three months of the year. But he thinks Ford will maintain its 13% retail market share, nonetheless.

If only the Extang tonneau could camouflage the industry’s doldrums, recuperation could be had. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it sounds.

Chrysler sales creep two percent

The American arm of the DaimlerChrysler AG reported a two percent increase in sales for the month of April as compared to the same month last year. The Chrysler Group sold 193,104 vehicles last month compared to the 190,095 units sold in April 2006.

“Chrysler Group increased sales in April based on a solid retail performance – despite two less selling days than in the previous year and a challenging market environment,” said Steven Landry, the executive vice president of NAFTA sales, global marketing, service and parts. “Driven by the continuously strong Jeep Wrangler and the new Jeep Patriot, sales for the Jeep brand were up significantly by 29 percent.”
