Lean Business System Key to Toyota’s Success
Toyota has been enjoying much success in the automotive industry. In fact, they are already poised to take over General Motors’ spot as the world’s largest car manufacturer. They may even stake the claim as the world’s best corporation. This success being enjoyed by the Asian carmaker has recently been covered by the New York Times Magazine. The story focuses on the car manufacturer’s lean business system which is the reason for the continuing success of Toyota. The business principle acts just like Volvo tune up parts that are used to increase the efficiency of the company as much as the parts increase the efficiency of a car when employed.
The production philosophy employed by Toyota focuses mainly on the elimination of wastes in the production process. The reduction or elimination of such wastes increases the efficiency of the production of Toyota products and at the same time, it is also capable of increasing the overall customer value. In this management philosophy, wastes in transportation, inventory, motion, waiting time, over-production, processing itself, and defective product are reduced to give the company better efficiency. If the aforementioned, wastes are reduced or eliminated so much so that the quality of the products is improved and the production time and cost will be significantly reduced too.
Toyota has implemented different tactics to deal with wastes in the production process. One of these tools used by the car manufacturer is constant process analysis. The Japanese call it “kaizen” or change for the better. The aim of this tactic is to eliminate wastes, in-time delivery of goods, production load leveling of amount and types, standardized work, paced moving lines, right-sized equipment, and other activities which reduce the waste of money, time and effort. The Japanese defines kaizen as the process “to take it apart and put back together in a better way”. This means that the conventional process has been taken apart and rearranged to make it more efficient. If this practice is done perfectly, this will lead to humanizing of the workplace, and eliminates hard work, both mentally and physically for the workers.
Another tool being used by Toyota to reduce the wastes in the production process is the pull production process. This philosophy is centered on the production based on the current demand of the market. This reduces over production which can seriously hurt a manufacturing company. While Toyota does not employ demand forecast in their production process, this works to their advantage. Since demand is hard to forecast, Toyota created a system that can easily and quickly produce products when there is a need for it. This means that they only produce cars according to the current demand, and if their supply runs out, they have the ability to quickly refurbish their stocks.
The third tool used by Toyota in reducing or eliminating wastes in the production process is mistake-proofing. This means that before they go into production, designs are studied carefully to assure perfect first-time quality. This zero-defect strategy aims to discover faults in the design before they are put into production. This way, costs, time, and effort exerted in the production is not wasted. Toyota also eliminates activities which do not add to the value of their products. Streamlining the production process gives the Asian car manufacturer the advantage of focusing their efforts on those activities which directly improves the efficiency of their process.
The lean business philosophy being used by Toyota has been so successful that they have already overtaken Ford Motor Company as the second largest car manufacturer in the US and is poised to take over GM’s post. The further implementation of the said strategy will no doubt increase the popularity of Toyota among car buyers.
Japan’s Big Three Posted Increased March 2007 Sales
The American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) recently reported the total U.S. auto sale for the month of March. The report shows the auto market increased sales by 0.8 percent compared to March 2006 sales. The increase in the new car sales is affected mostly by Asian brands since the U.S.’ Big Three reported reduced sales for the said month.
Japan’s version of the Big Three played a major role in the improvement of auto sales in the United States last month. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan all posted increased sales for the month of March. Even the luxury division of the said Japanese car manufacturers posted strong sales. Scion is the only Japanese brand from the three biggest Japanese car manufacturers to post reduced sales for the month of March.
The Toyota Division leads the way for the Toyota Motor Corporation with a 12.7 percent increase in their 2007 March sales. The division sold 213,820 units last month. That figure is composed of 121,881 passenger cars and 91,939 light trucks. Passenger car sales increased by 17.8 percent as compared to that of March of 2006 while light truck sales increased by 6.7 percent over that of March 2006. The Toyota Camry is still the best selling model for the division and the company as a whole with 37,110 units sold last month. Although the Camry showed reduced sales for the month, the Toyota Corolla takes up the slack by posting a 6.3 percent increase over March 2006 sales. The hybrid Prius still continue posting strong sales figures as the demand for green vehicles increases. For light trucks, the Toyota Tacoma pickup led the way posting 16.5 percent sales increase over March 2006 as 18,243 units of Tacomas were sold.
Lexus, the luxury division of the Toyota Motor Corporation, posted a 4.6 percent increase in sales for the month of March. The division sold 28,855 units last month and raised the year to date sales to 73,491 units. For the first three month of the year, Lexus has already posted a 7.5 percent sales improvement over the first quarter of 2006. The best selling model for the luxury division is the ES 350 sedan with 7,444 units sold and that marks an increase of 75.9 percent over last year for the same period.
Meanwhile, the youth division Scion recorded reduced sales for the month of March compared to March 2006. The tC sports coupe is the best selling model of the brand with 6,314 units sold. What affected the reduced sale for the brand is the reduced sale of the xA which is down by 33.9 percent for the month of March.
Honda, the second biggest Japanese car manufacturer, also posted increased sales last month as compared to March 2006. The Honda division sold 126,406 units, posting a 9.5 percent improvement over March 2006. The Honda Accord is still the best selling passenger car for the Japanese outfit. Sales for the Accord reached 36,506 units and that is an increase of 18.8 percent. For light trucks, the best selling Honda model is the CR-V, with 19,658 units sold, an increase of 49.2 percent.
The increased sale of the CR-V and the Accord helped Honda reached its best March sales in its history and as long as the demand for these models increases, not even a highly efficient brake from EBC active brakes direct can stop the forward surge of Honda. Honda’s luxury division, Acura also posted strong sales with the increased demand for the MDX and RDX SUVs. Both models helped the division reached total March sale of 16,986 units. The best selling model Acura is the TL luxury sedan with 5,769 units sold.
Nissan, another surging Japanese car manufacturer, posted a 6.6 percent sales increase for the month of March. The company sold 97,242 units while sales for the first quarter of the year increased to 246,436 units. For the first three months of 2007, Nissan posted a 5.3 percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2006. The best selling model for Nissan is the Altima sedan with 27,521 units sold, posting an increase of 13.7 percent.
Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury division also enjoyed increased sales by posting 16.8 percent sales improvement for the month of March 2007. The division sold 13,877 units last month.
Toyota robot violinist
Toyota’s robot violinist has 17 computer-controlled joints in its arms and fingers, which allow it to hold the violin, gently draw the bow, and correctly press the strings against the fingerboard. In a recital held at a Toyota showroom in Tokyo on December 6, the 152-centimeter (5-ft) tall humanoid entertained guests with a rendition of “Pomp and Circumstance.”

1986 Toyota 4×4 truck alternator is draining the battery?
I have a 1986 toyota 4×4 truck. I blew the radiator hose that is over the alternator. After replacing the radiator hose I fired up the truck and took it for a drive around the block, I noticed that the charge light came on then went out then came on then went out by that time I was back home and parked the truck. Later on that same day I went to move the truck and it was dead. So I check to see how many volts were in the battery there was like 2 volts. I removed the positive bat. cable and charged the bat. up, when I went to put the bat. cable back on I noticed an arc when I touched the bat. post with the bat. cable. I started the truck up and check what the votls were at the bat. 13.86 volts ruffly, so that’s telling me the alternator is charging. But when I rev the motor up the charge like comes on, when the motor comes down to an idle it go’s off. What’s going on inside my alternator and what can I do to fix it with out buying a new alternator.
Gm After 70 Years of Being No.1: Bowing Down to Toyota?
Toyota Motors have been very open about their plan of grabbing the number one spot from General Motors this year. And sadly, with the present turn of events for General Motors it is not impossible for it to lose its post to Toyota.
According to analysts for this year, Toyota Motors will succeed in overtaking General Motors and will become the new largest carmaker in the world. Looking back in the year 1931 when GM became the world’s numero uno, threats of toppling it down seems to be impossibility.
General Motors has been the world’s number one automaker for the past 70 years and if ever Toyota really do surpass GM that would have an intense psychological effect on the entirety of the US industry which is sadly to say the last manufacturing sector where Americans still lead.
One of the reasons cited for General Motors sudden plunged is its failure to adapt its production methods to meet the changing consumer tastes. General Motors have failed to realize that it would not always have the same edge that it has like in the year 1955 when four out of five cars in the world were US made and half of them were products of GM. This probably was one of the reasons why GM is in its dismal state right now since it has become too confident of its standing in the auto industry and failed to see the imminent danger that would challenge its position.
The edge of Toyota over General Motors is the fact that the Japanese automaker was concentrating on changing its production system to become more efficient and leaner. The complacency on the part of GM was countered by Toyota with relentless pursuit for excellence which resulted to the changing fortunes of the two companies. Although, it is wrong also to construe that GM products are deteriorating in quality but the main point is that the automaker has been very lax lately which has given the Japanese automaker the chance to grab most its market share.
Until the time comes that Toyota be officially proclaimed as the new number 1 automaker in the world, General Motors will continue to lead as the world’s largest carmaker in terms of vehicles produced and auto parts manufactured and that includes products like GM grille guards. The only question now is for how long?
1994 Toyota Camry diagnostics?
I am looking for a handheld diagnostic tool to help me troubleshoot the problem with the car. All that I can find are OBD II units but they are for post 1996 vehicles. The Camry has a diagnostic plug near the emergency break so I know that there is some diagnostic unit that can be used… What type of plug is this? OBD I, or some other plug name? Any suggestions? If you can provide a URL it would be greatly appreciated!
